About

A small, free tool from plusbeauxjours.

Your location stays in your browser. NOAA data is downloaded the same for everyone.

plusbeauxjours makes small tools that answer one question clearly, with sources. This one answers: can I see the northern lights tonight, when, and which way do I look?

What happens to your place

  • Your ZIP, city or location is used in your browser to work out tonight's darkness, moon, and the Kp you need.
  • The NOAA aurora files we download are the same for everyone. They don't include your place.
  • The cloud forecast is off until you turn it on. Then your area, rounded to about 1 km, is sent to the National Weather Service (api.weather.gov), and nothing else.
  • Your last place and your cloud choice are saved in this browser only. “Forget this place” and “Turn off” remove them.
  • We count visits with Google Analytics. It never receives your ZIP, city, coordinates, Kp or times: only that a result was shown and which word it was (for example “unlikely”). No ads.

Not an official forecast

Not affiliated with NOAA or the National Weather Service. We use their public data and say so next to every number. Aurora forecasts are uncertain: this is a guide, not a promise. The full method is on how it works.
